The collision of luxury and lifestyle is fracturing the contemporary travel industry, transforming travel brands into lifestyle brands with a distaste for the conventional. THE REBELS recognise those creative dissenters whose fight for their individual cause finds them at the forefront of this new, limited edition take on travel.

This year’s shortlist was compiled by a creative cartel of cross-industry artists whose own experience in deviating from the norm won them a place on our judging panel. Then the collective had their say when they voted on the winners at LE Miami 2015 – check out who they crowned (and get inspired to enter THE REBELS 2016!) below.

STARWOOD HOTELS & RESORTS

This year Starwood introduced the hotel industry’s first truly keyless room entry system: SPG Keyless – the groundbreaking digital innovation that allows guests to use their smartphones as a room key. By redefining the traditional hotel key and allowing guests to bypass the front desk entirely, SPG Keyless has forever changed the hospitality landscape.

Marvellous marketing that offers a new way to connect with travellers and takes a brand to the next level, from online content destinations to clever social media campaigns or an innovative series of events.

Ace Hotel Downtown

ACE HOTEL DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES / SHOREDITCH / NEW YORK

Ace Hotel hosted a private screening of Inherent Vice at The Theatre at Ace Hotel DTLA. Encapsulating their philosophy of engagement, they went on to present Inherent Vice-inspired gallery exhibits at Ace Hotel DTLA, Ace Hotel New York and Ace Hotel London, during which guests received a limited-edition vinyl of the film’s soundtrack.

The Miami Beach Edition

THE MIAMI BEACH EDITION

To coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach and the launch of the hotel, The Miami Beach EDITION partnered with award-winning website SHOWstudio to host a series of dynamic and gracefully provocative interviews with creative visionaries in contemporary culture, including Ian Schrager, on location in Miami from the hotel’s exclusive new bungalows.

Insightful integration with the local cultural landscape with the power to transform, elevate or highlight the profile of a neighbourhood, whether through an unconventional launch location, work with local creatives or inclusive events involving the community.

Andaz

ANDAZ

Andaz partnered with the online travel community, Passion Passport, to activate multiple weeklong Instagram challenges – for example, asking users to share travel memories centered around a local tradition, or their favourite works of street art – using dedicated hashtags. The challenges also included Twitter chats, Passion Passport website content, and content for Andaz’s Facebook and Tumblr.

The most unique, edgy and inspiring travel experiences being curated by members of our collective and tailored for the new generation of creative class traveller.

The Langham London

THE LANGHAM, LONDON

In collaboration with Defibrillator, The Langham commissioned Ben Ellis’ play, The Armour, in Spring 2015. Consisting of three interlinking stories taking place at different times over the course of the Langham’s lifetime, the play was performed within the hotel, attracting local residents and putting the hotel on the map as a centre of artistic activity.

From revolutionary new interiors to awe-inspiring architecture and super sleek transport, we’re seeking inventive design that has made a significant impact within the industry in the last year.

Baccarat Hotel

BACCARAT HOTEL

Baccarat’s glass façade was designed to make it look like a Baccarat crystal. The interior is a perfect mix of classic Parisian and modern elements that come together seamlessly to provide an environment like no other. Other notable features include the 15,000 pieces of crystal stemware and 17 chandeliers from the Baccarat factory in France.
