MADE HOTEL NEW YORK IS FINALLY OPEN

We’ve made no secret of our excitement about New York’s MADE Hotel (see here and here), so we’re thrilled that the new boutique hotel with a global soul is now open in the NoMad area of Manhattan.

Last time we checked in, we gave you all the nitty gritty details on the low-key cool room designs. So now, let’s take a look at the public spaces in the new hotel…

As the spiel on the hotel’s website puts it, when it comes to restaurants and bars at MADE, “From dawn to dusk (and the wee hours beyond), we’re guided by one simple idea: experiences are the new luxury.”

When we toured the hotel earlier in the summer, the lobby, bar and patio spaces were still in the works, but we got a good sense of the careful attention to detail hotelier Sam Gelin had used in designing the spaces with Studio MAI.

Here’s a rundown:

Ferris Restaurant

This was still a work in progress when we visited, but Ferris will be serving dishes that shine a spotlight on fresh ingredients, and the menus – for lunch and dinner – are described as “an unexpected balance between rustic and refined.”

Paper (Coffee Shop)

This area, tucked along the front wall of the hotel’s entry level, is of course designed to be a relaxed communal area, perfect for a morning pit stop. The space is warm and cosy, and thanks to the large wooden island with seating in the middle of the room, it feels more like a large, stylish open kitchen. That island reminds us of the food or drinks table at a party – the place everyone congregates and the best gossip takes place.

Paper’s design elements are solid: reclaimed solid ash shelving; reclaimed solid walnut flooring; and blue McIntyre wall tile. The floor tile, in a custom pattern for MADE, is handmade, and the countertop is made from Heathermoor Slate from Vermont. The furniture and lighting was designed by Studio Mai exclusively for the hotel; fabrics are by Mark Alexander and Romo Group.

Good Behavior (Rooftop bar)

The views from the top of the hotel are pure New York: complete with fires escapes and water towers and – oh, hi there, Empire State Building! Good Behavior will be open during the day for lounging and sunning, and at night it will become a “whatever-the-evening-brings” bar with soaring ceilings and a top-notch sound system.

Again, there are impeccable design details here, including a reclaimed wood ceiling and stylish lighting designed by Studio Mai. Tiles are a standout – the Japanese wall tiles in the bathroom and the back wall of the kitchen, and the retro-coloured tiles of the island counter. Outdoor seating is in solid wood with a variety of vintage fabrics, while inside there are original Angel Pazmino leather cocktail tables, ironwood tables from Tanzania and an African birthing chair made into a coffee table (!).

Lobby Bar

On the hotel’s website, this is described as “Warm woods, low light, and the absence of agendas.” It was still under construction during our visit, but it had the same warm feel as the coffee shop area, sharing its reclaimed solid walnut flooring and reclaimed ash shelving. We’re excited to get back and enjoy a cocktail here, so we can admire the marble black bar with brass shelving and a limestone bar top, the collection of vintage furniture, and the Studio Mai-designed pieces, made from charred cedar, custom tile, rosewood, walnut and redwood.

Patio

This space, out the back of the hotel, behind the lobby bar, is a surprisingly calm oasis, surrounded by buildings on all sides, but decked out with comfy seating and greenery. It is only open to guests, and will be open during the day as a quiet spot to read, take five, or who knows, maybe even take a nap.

MADE is now taking reservations, and while rates vary (we noticed rooms in the $300-500 range for this month), there are some days where rates are around $259+ tax a night.
