THREE NEW BARCELONA HOTELS TO WAKE UP IN THIS YEAR
It’s not like you ever need an excuse to visit Barcelona; the beachside Spanish city delivers on many fronts when looking for a weekend break. Time it right this year, though, and you’ll have three shiny new hotels to choose from: check out the contestants from our Master Opening List vying for your attention below.
1. THE ONE BARCELONA
Part of Spanish group H10 Hotels, The One Barcelona is one of fourteen H10 hotels in the city, but the only one that doesn’t have H10 in its name (and the only one that is classified as 5* Grand Luxury – probably the reason for that distinction).
Located on Carrer de Provença in Eixample, the hotel is a block away from Passeig de Gràcia and almost next door to sibling H10 Casa Mimosa, which opened last year. Inside, you’ll find 64 rooms and 25 suites in warm colours, with bold gold-framed art above the bed and gold faucets and octagonal mirrors in the bathroom.
Somni Restaurant & Cocteleria is an all-day dining and tapas venue on the ground floor; on the roof, there is Mood bar and terrace and a guest-only area with a plunge pool. A spa with ‘experience’ pool, sauna, treatment room and fitness centre rounds out the facilities.
The One wins this list by being actually open – reservations are live, including opening offers that chop 30% off normal rates.
2. ALMANAC BARCELONA
Not just a new hotel, but the first of an entire new luxury brand: Almanac Hotels. Properties in Vienna, Prague, Budapest and Zagreb are in the works, but Almanac Barcelona will kick things off when it opens this summer on Gran Via.
Almanac promises to focus on the four elements that ‘make up an entire journey’: scent, taste, light and touch. Set on the corner of Gran Via and Carrer de Pau Claris, many of the 92 rooms and suites will have bay windows, as can be seen in the rendering above.
This is what that looks like from the inside, with a design majoring on grey, beige and gold, and a small sofa allowing you to curl up and look out over the city. Guests will have access to an Almanac app called ‘Connect & Collect’, which gives access to a personal concierge, an area guide, free international calls and more, without incurring phone charges.
A Mediterranean brasserie called Línia – ‘inspired by the iconic grid system of Barcelona’ – serves food all day. Azimuth (a term used in navigation to chart a path using astronomy) is the rooftop bar, with pool and sun loungers exclusive for hotel guests.
3. THE BARCELONA EDITION
Finally, if Marriott and Schrager live up to their promise, this year should also see the opening of The Barcelona EDITION. That’s the second European EDITION (there is London; Istanbul seems to have left and is now called ‘The Istanbul Peg’, a name that may not work so well internationally) and together with Bangkok, Abu Dhabi and Shanghai should take the total number of EDITION hotels to eight by the time we get to 2018.
With 100 rooms, the hotel will be in Ciutat Vella, next to the Santa Caterina Market. No other visuals are available other than the rendering above, showing the converted office building with its ‘three distinct restaurant experiences, along with an activated lobby space, club and rooftop bar area’.
