To say 1 Hotel South Beach has radically changed what was once the Gansevoort is an understatement: out went the hot pink and in came – against a backdrop of whites and neutrals – lots of green, from the living walls around the front entrance to the small glass bowls in the guestrooms.

This month, the hotel has made some additional changes, bringing in two new partnerships: one a domestic first, the other an international first, but both there to make you look and feel that much better at the pool or the beach.

Let’s start with pampering before we get to the more painful (though perhaps ultimately more rewarding) part in a minute: the first Bamford Haybarn spa this side of the Atlantic.

That name will probably be familiar to Londoners as the spa found on the roof at Maybourne’s The Berkeley, with its (rare for the UK capital) rooftop pool (the only other full Bamford spa is in Daylesford, Gloucestershire).

At the 1 South Beach you’ll find Bamford on the second floor, along with the Spartan gym. In fact, the entrance to the latter is visible just down the hall, so if you are having second thoughts about that workout, you can still bail mere steps away and make a right to go for a treatment instead.

Those treatments take place in one of 12 rooms in 4,500 sq ft of total spa space, with a relaxation area (The Woodland Room) and changing facilities with steam rooms. The spa menu offers everything from hot and cold stone massages to facials and full-day packages including lunch.

Walking down the hall, the Spartan Gym is a massive 14,000 sq ft inspired by the obstacle race and one of the largest and best equipped gyms we’ve ever been to. With different areas for ‘athleticism, endurance and strength’, this is as far away from the stereotypical basement hotel gym with broken treadmill and blinking overhead lighting as you can get.

There are also complimentary classes for hotel guests, ranging from yoga and meditation to high-intensity workouts. Want to take it a step further? You can book a Spartan package that includes a private consultation with a Spartan coach to set up a personalised fitness plan for your stay, 15% off personal training sessions, and an F&B credit for Spartan-approved items at the hotel’s restaurants.
