THE BANGKOK EDITION IS CLOSE TO TOPPING OUT
Reykjavik may be a place where EDITION Hotels’ signature fur blanket is appropriate, but we wonder whether they will show up in Bangkok too – probably not a place we associate with the need to layer up, unless it’s against overzealous air-conditioning.
Whatever we will find inside the hotel, the pixelated MahaNakhon Tower that The Bangkok EDITION will be part of is rising steadily; so steadily that it is close to topping out at 77 stories next to the Chong Nonsi Skytrain station on the Silom line. This construction shot shows where things are at:
We mentioned MahaNakhon when we talked about Andaz Singapore because the two developments share the same architect. From hexagonal windows in Singapore, here we are talking a pixelated exterior that recalls a twisted Rubik’s kube or game of Jenga depending on your point of view. The 159-room EDITION hotel will find its home on the lower floors of MahaNakhon, with the majority of the citywide views reserved for 194 Ritz-Carlton Residences further up – and of course, a rooftop bar.
Last time we saw construction with our own eyes was in April last year, when it hadn’t progressed beyond 15 stories or so. Just popping into frame on the right is MahaNakhon Cube, between the tower and the Skytrain station, which among other things houses a Dean & Deluca.
EDITION lists 2016 for opening, which we’d be very happy with – perhaps this time next year? There are plenty of visuals for the Ritz-Carlton residences on the internet, but the design for EDITION is still to be confirmed; we’ll let you know if so much as a hint of a rendering surfaces.
