It was well before the start of this decade that we learned that Philippe Starck (omnipresent as ever in the hotel world) was working on his very own brand: YOO Hotels. The years rolled by, and aside from the short-lived Istanbul property (Yoo2 Taksim Square), there was little opportunity to experience YOO’s ‘hotels unlike any other’.

But! The start of the new year has come with a much improved website and a clearer view on upcoming properties, which should include one opening this year for each of YOO’s two brands: YOO Collection and Yoo2. The difference between the two? We’ll let YOO explain:

‘Our luxury hotel brand, the YOO Collection, brings together Signature Designers and the renowned YOO Design Studio with some of the world’s most sublime destinations and flawless yet personal service’

‘Yoo2 continues the design ethic in an eclectic group of lifestyle hotels; each one a striking expression of local soul’

Now you know. And those new hotels? YOO Collection Aqua Boracay, on Boracay Island in the Philippines, and Yoo2 Rio de Janeiro. We’ll take a quick look at both of them.

Set on Bulabog Beach, YOO Collection Aqua Boracay will have 168 studios and apartments starting at 545 sq ft (50 sq meters), all with private terraces and very beach-chic design. We love the round wooden chair and matching coffee table. Residences are also for sale.

The resort will have a restaurant and bar, as well as a beach club for pool/beach-side eating and drinking. If you feel like staying in, you can get a recipe box from one of the chefs with all the ingredients and instructions you need to make your own dinner in your room.

Reservations aren’t live yet, so exact opening dates and rates are still to come.

Racing across the date line and the Pacific to Brazil, Yoo2 Rio de Janeiro also has ‘Book Soon’ rather than live reservations, but we’d assume that to change and be up and running in time for the Olympics.

There is lots to see in the first room renderings, not least of which are the views out the window, including Sugar Loaf mountain and Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer), depending on the category. The first rendering above is of a ‘Bossa N’Sugar Room’, and on the left you can see the YOO Tree – ‘an organically designed furniture piece for state-of-the-art AV and books’ – which will be in every room. Signature YOO beds will have cushioned headboards, suitcase storage, and Hynos mattresses.

Regardless of the view from your room, you can catch Rio’s famous sights from the rooftop pool and bar. Food served throughout the hotel focuses on healthy eating, with cold-pressed juices, superfood salads, and dairy- and wheat-free options.

The second Yoo2 hotel will also open in Brazil, in Porto Allegre in 2018. Future YOO Collection hotels are coming to Phuket, Bali, and the Cotswolds – all scheduled for 2018 as well.
