After London, Miami Beach, New York, and most recently, Sanya (China), we’ve been eager for the expansion of Marriott’s EDITION hotels. But our hopes of bringing in 2017 on top of The Bangkok EDITION’s MahaNakhon tower were quickly dashed when its opening was pushed back. Then Barcelona was added to the list for this year… But at this point, you probably know how that has turned out: it’s delayed.

Where does that leave us? 2018 may be a year of redemption for EDITION, with enough openings promised to nearly triple its presence. All of them are split between the rather vague “mid-2018” and “late-2018”, but still – read on for what we know today.

First up: Shanghai. On Nanjing Road, not far from the city’s famous Bund, The Shanghai EDITION will have 147 rooms split between two towers, which may look something like this. Ten levels of public spaces feature F&B outlets (including a signature Japanese restaurant), meeting rooms, a members’ club bar and screening room, along with a ‘nightlife venue’ and rooftop bar. Somewhere in there is the sculptural staircase, and in the right room you can snag a view of the Oriental Pearl Tower across the river in Pudong.

Then, of course, there’s Bangkok. There isn’t much we can say about MahaNakhon and the combined EDITION Hotel and Ritz-Carlton Residences that we haven’t said before. The Bangkok EDITION will have 154 rooms and five levels of public spaces, pool and spa. With Park Hyatt having opened this summer on Ploenchit Road; Rosewood under construction a few doors down; Waldorf Astoria going up next to Grand Hyatt Erawan; and Four Seasons working on its new riverside hotel, the hotel won’t lack in competition.

Much more intimately scaled is The Barcelona EDITION, with 100 rooms in the city’s El Born district next to the Santa Caterina market. A signature restaurant, club and lounge, cocktail bar, rooftop bar and outdoor pool are all included, which will no doubt be packed from the second it all opens.

Continuing with destinations that start with ‘B’, though a resort rather than city hotel, is The Bodrum EDITION. Its 99 rooms, suites and villas will all have views of the Aegan Sea, while a select number will have private gardens and pools. Like Istanbul, Bodrum is having a tough time, so we’re curious to see how EDITION will do here.

Finally, we have two additions in the US in New York and LA. Over in the Big Apple, The Times Square EDITION will join the existing hotel just off of Madison Square Park. About the same size as Shanghai, Bangkok, Barcelona, and Bodrum combined, the 457-room hotel will have a 5,800-square-foot beer garden overlooking Times Square on top of a 120-foot-tall, 18,000-square-foot LED display – go here for some renderings.

In California, The West Hollywood EDITION is rising at West Sunset Boulevard and North Doheny Drive. As you’d imagine, there is an outdoor pool and rooftop. Inside, there are 190 rooms along with 20 residences.

Perhaps in an effort not to be outdone by eco-friendly 1 Hotels, also coming to West Hollywood, it looks like the lush greenery on the building’s exterior will be a key feature – you can see a few more renderings here.
