While we’ve been following the construction of Nobu Shoreditch ever since the first whisper of its arrival, so far, we’ve had to make do with comparing construction shots to exterior renderings (it’s going on three years since we first walked down Willow Street to check things out) and a few glimpses of the public spaces.

No more. An expanded website is live, we have photos of the rooms (150 in total, of which seven are suites) and reservations are possible (from this summer). Not enough? Nobu Hotels just threw in a second European opening in the mix – and not some distant, next decade, yet-to-start project: Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay is arriving in June. Yes, this June.

But first, back to those Shoreditch rooms, where ‘black joinery contrasts with the exposed concrete structure and soft textiles of the furniture’. There are distinct Japanese elements to the design, particularly in the lighting and the window treatments. Deluxe and Executive rooms are the same size (22 sq m / 237 sq ft), with the latter being on the top two floors of the hotel. Premium rooms are only slightly larger, with a Studio Suite still being a relatively compact 33 sq m (355 sq ft).

Here is another angle. Visuals of the seven suites are still to come, but they will have the luxury of private balconies overlooking the small garden – at the narrow end of the hotel where the façade appears to collapse into the ground (see the exterior shot further below). They add freestanding bathtubs and dining space to have Nobu room-service (which runs 24hrs a day) properly.

Bathrooms are bright white, and needless to say the accent colour is gold: a custom-designed gold washbasin and gold fixtures and fittings.

The gold returns – this time contrasting with jet black – in the hallways.

At 240 seats, there will be plenty of space for diners to nosh on all the Nobu Matsuhisa signature dishes coming from the kitchen. There are 80 seats outside too, and a semi-private dining area overlooking the expert slicing of yellowtail sashimi and rolling of unagi maki. Other facilities will include a lobby bar and a spa and fitness centre.

Opening is on the books for June, and we imagine that Nobu Shoreditch will aim to grab that title of first European Nobu hotel, cutting the ribbon ahead of the June 30th date listed for its sibling: the 152-room Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, on the beaches of Talamanca Bay two kilometres north of Ibiza Town.

These are a few first impressions of Nobu à la Mediterranée, with two seafront pools, three restaurants and a pool bar, and notably a Six Senses spa. From Nobu Shoreditch it’s only a short hop to London’s City airport, which has direct flights to Ibiza – surely that’s a combination that’s worth exploring this summer?
