When we talked about The Beekman New York as the city’s third Thompson hotel, we said that a second hotel was on its way to Mexico before the year was out. Hard as it may be to realise, 2015 is very nearly over, and Thompson Hotels has delivered on its promise, opening Thompson Playa del Carmen a few weeks ago.

Open it did, if only with one portion of the hotel – that located on Quinta Avenida, where you will find 92 rooms, an infinity rooftop pool and bar and restaurants Catch and Cinco.

Rooms range from a Deluxe Queen to corner Thompson Suites, with above a City View Suite. Opening rates start just under $300 for a Deluxe Queen, but that also gets you breakfast for two and a $75 beverage credit.

If you want a feet-in-the-sand experience, you’ll have to wait a few more months for the Beach House. Right on the water at 8th Street, it will add another 27 suites and beach club to the hotel.

Circling back quickly to The Beekman, the hotel is now accepting reservations from May 1, 2016. Booking a room is a case of blind faith in Thompson as of now, with not a hint of a rendering or photo to be found on the website. Rates start at $509 excl. taxes & fees on the first weekend of May, which gets you an entry-level Superior Queen at 285 sq ft, Sferra linens, Carrara marble bathroom with rain shower, free WiFi, and an ‘eclectic mix of bespoke and vintage furnishings sourced from antique dealers across the world’.
