Paddleboards and kayaks are de rigueur for any beachfront resort these days but Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort in St. Lucia, has a different way to explore the open waters…by bike.

Sugar Beach is the only hotel to offer S1 Water Bikes–a bicycle-catamaran hybrid from inventor Judah Schiller, who was the first person to bike (yes, bike) across the San Francisco Bay and the Hudson River. Instead of pedaling the bike to get the wheels moving, pedaling this bike-boat gets the inflatable pontoons floating. You can also steer the bike-boat by turning the handlebars. Alas, there’s no motor attached in case you get stuck at sea, but cruising the protected waters between St. Lucia’s Pitons (which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site) shouldn’t be too stressful.

Other fun water activities offered by Sugar Beach include the PADI Dive Centre, a sailing school and night snorkeling tours. And then there’s always the old standby–actually swimming in the water.

Rates start around $755 a night in May.
