THE REBELS 2013 JUDGE – ROMAN AND WILLIAMS
ROMAN AND WILLIAMS
Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, the duo behind Roman and Williams, are the interior designers and architects responsible for some of the most rebellious, provocative and inspiring projects of the last decade. Having met in Hollywood as art directors and production designers for films including Practical Magic and Zoolander, Standefer and Alesch formed Roman and Williams to create architectural and interior designs based on the tension between refinement and rebellion. These include instant classics such as the Ace Hotel, Standard NY, Royalton Hotel, Boom Boom Room and even the food hall at the new Facebook campus in California. They have recently launched a product design division, with forthcoming collaborations planned with the Ace Hotel, Lalique and New York design gallery Matter. Other projects launching this year include the Viceroy Hotel in New York, a converted brewery hotel in Texas and new restaurant Lafayette. They are also taking part in the restoration of an iconic 1949 building in Miami Beach into a six-star hotel. Despite their constantly shifting aesthetic, all Roman and Williams projects are characterised by their ability to reflect the narrative of those who occupy them as well as the couple’s singular vision.
