When it came to GREATEST GUEST EXPERIENCE, our judges were looking for the most unique, edgy and inspiring travel experiences being curated by members of our collective and tailored for the new generation of creative class traveller.

ACE HOTEL DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES / LONDON SHOREDITCH: BEDTIME STORIES

OBJECTIVE

Bringing local writers together at Ace’s London and LA homes, Ace and Visual Editions’ Bedtime Stories explored interpretations on a titular theme — from raunchy escapades to claustrophobic fantasies to a story about a dog. Writers in London included Zoe Pilger and Will Self; Los Angeles featured Brian DeLeeuw, Aimee Bender and others. The stories were recorded to be accessed by guests via in-room radios.

HOW WAS THIS GUEST EXPERIENCE UNIQUE

At the touch of a bedside button, guests are able to explore hours of exclusive readings from world-renowned authors — keeping them entertained in the twilight hours. In addition to the recordings, Ace launched the project with a pair of literary readings, where guests enjoyed live recitations of the stories from

RESULTS

The resulting six stories exclusively written, read and recorded for our own in-house radio channel, were also pressed to vinyl as a special holiday gift.


HOTEL G SAN FRANCISCO: MAKER’S MARKET

Hotel G SF - Garance Dore

OBJECTIVE

To offer our guests a new way to learn and shop from some of the top local artisans.

HOW DID YOU INTERACT WITH THE NEIGHBOURHOOD?

Hotel G San Francisco has partnered with online boutique Merch to host a series of Maker’s Markets showcasing local artisan companies. The events create an opportunity for Bay Area business owners to share their knowledge through intimate hands-on workshops. Open to the public, seminars are led by makers such as Elizabeth Street Cosmetics, custom perfumer L’aromatic, soap makers Ella + Billie

RESULTS

We have been able to appeal to a local audience we would have never been exposed too. We also benefited by being partnered with some of the top makers in San Francisco.


POUSADA LITERÁRIA DE PARATY: MURYCANA FARM BIRDWATCHING EXPERIENCE

OBJECTIVE

Since Literaria acquired Murycana Farm (a devastated and abandoned Colonial farm), a big renewal effort started, including reforestation. As a result of the renewed fauna, a very diverse birdlife returned to the region. Beyond appreciation of the beautiful farm, the main objective from the start was to expose our guests to the vast benefits that environmental sustainable projects can deliver.

HOW WAS THIS GUEST EXPERIENCE UNIQUE

In our Birdwatching tour, guests have a first-hand impact of what reforestation efforts can have for a region. Our guests follow alongside our Ornithologist the cataloguing of birds by our Ornithologist, before releasing back to Nature. This is followed by breakfast by a small creek, and complemented with a tour of the farm to witness our organic production, and the replanting of trees and fauna.

RESULTS

The reforestation process has already had impressive impact in the local environment, with the increase of the birdlife diversity (280 of the 360 different species in the region can be found in the Farm grounds), replanting of most of the trees have started. But the largest impact will be in the mid-term – both in environmental aspects and educational.


REFINERY HOTEL NEW YORK: RESOLUTIONS REFINED

OBJECTIVE

To inspire & support our guests’ healthy habits, we kicked off with Wellthily, an experiential wellness curator, the “Journey Joyfully” campaign, w/ Zappos.com & Under-Armour. We offered robust fitness classes run by the best of NYC’s fitness scene, athleisure retail curated by Pop UP Summer, Blue Print Cleanse’s Blue Print Lab with innovative cold press cocktails & numerous wellness activations.

HOW WAS THIS GUEST EXPERIENCE UNIQUE

Encouraging wellness while traveling w/on-site wellness socials, fashion + fitness retail, & an innovative in-room tech play powered by Zappos. The tablet features room service delivery of UnderArmour apparel and a curated guide with perks & discounts to local healthy hotspots. These tablets also powered on-demand meditation w/Deepak Chopra, as well as in-room workouts by celebrity trainers

RESULTS

We hosted 1500 + guests, locals, & members of the media as they launched their personal resolutions. One major media outlet sponsored each activation as Refinery welcomed top influencers, which resulted in over 4.5 million impressions & 5600 new followers across social channels with additional magazine articles about to publish. Guests to come will be checking for the next class on deck!


VELAA PRIVATE ISLAND: CORAL ADOPTION PROGRAMME AND TURTLE NURSERY

OBJECTIVE

Being on a private island, where the closest ‘civilization’ is a resort 25 min away by speedboat, we have first to define ‘neighbors’. We are neighbors to our coral reefs, where our marine biologist on property is doing a fantastic job with our ‘Coral adoption’ program. Our objective is to promote sustainable tourism and interaction with our neighbourhood, while helping the restoration of the Maldivian flora and fauna.

HOW WAS THIS GUEST EXPERIENCE UNIQUE

We invite guests to snorkel and dive with our marine biologist to collect broken fragments of corals and attach them to a coral dome with their name. 3 months later our marine biologists send pictures to our clients showing the progress of ‘their’ corals. It’s a fun way to sustain local nature and help the local coral reefs. Sea turtles have provided the name to our resort, as Velaa means ‘turtle’ in Dhivehi. We have a turtle nursery on the island and supervise the nests during summer season to ensure baby turtles are well taken care of.

RESULTS

Every summer we have sea turtles returning to their island to lay eggs in their nests, knowing they are safe. Our reef is getting a diversity of beautiful corals and is becoming one of our unique selling points.
