Henry Ives Cobb, a founding member of the club, designed the Chicago Athletic Association Building, which was completed in 1893. It was restored with the help of interior design firm Roman and Williams.

DISCUSS THE ETHOS OR STORY BEHIND THE DESIGN

The Chicago Athletic Association Hotel is set in an 122 year-old Venetian Gothic Building. Its interior pays homage to its past while feeling very modern and new.

Many of the building’s elaborate architectural details are preserved, as the ornate millwork and tiled floors throughout the interior and the stained glass and cast-iron exterior relief have all been restored. One of the greatest highlights of the new hotel is its rooftop restaurant’s deck space that offers sweeping views of Michigan Avenue and Millennium.

The thoughtful contemporary inn now fuses rural and urban, hi-tech and craft, old and new. Site-specific installations and commissioned artworks, by both emerging and renowned local and international artists, are integrated into the architecture, injecting the spaces with whimsy and playfulness..

DISCUSS THE ETHOS OR STORY BEHIND THE DESIGN

After eight years of extensive planning and construction, the Mivtachim Sanitarium, Yaakov Rechter’s award-winning masterwork of postwar Brutalism, reopened as the Elma Arts Complex Luxury Hotel, an innovative boutique property set on the rim of Israel’s Mount Carmel Ridge overlooking vast sloping forests and the deep blue Mediterranean Sea.

Elma is the brainchild of Israeli philanthropist and art collector Lily Elstein, whose original dream was to build a cultural center. And yet Elma, with 95 spacious, opulently outfitted guestrooms and 750 square meters of gallery space devoted to Israeli and international artists, feels as much like a cultural hotspot as a luxury hotel. Elma (an acronym for Elstein Music and Art) also features two state-of-the-art performance halls, the locally sourced Oratorio restaurant, indoor and outdoor pools, and a sumptuous spa.

The hotel and residences are boxes, chambers suspended over mirrors of seawater. In them, vegetation, birds, clouds, the Moon and the Sun can contemplate themselves, captivated by a narcissistic enchantment of sorts. They regard one another, find one another and are reunited through the reflection of water as an entire reality.

DISCUSS THE ETHOS OR STORY BEHIND THE DESIGN

Situated in the creative Beyoglu district, the complex of Soho House Istanbul consists of 4 different buildings altogether, each one offering a unique experience like a spa, a fine dining restaurant and two rooftop pools.

The interior designer’s main inspiration for the renovation was the city of Istanbul itself and its special mix of old and new. While original frescoes, Carrara marble flooring and rosewood doors were restored, they work together with local suppliers for furnishings and tilings. Thus Soho House succeeds to create an inspiring atmosphere in the middle of the buzzing city of Istanbul.
