In the age of Insta, it takes a lot to standout from the crowd. But whether it’s injecting a social space with an extra dose of style or celebrating the arty allure of the local community, these new additions to the LE collective know what it takes to turn heads.

This week we’re meeting five hotels whose distinctive good looks are raising the bar when it comes to urban design.

NAME: Nordic Light Hotel

LOCATION: Stockholm

CAUSE: Taking lobbies to a new level.

Pre-empting one of the design trends taking 2018 by storm, the Nordic Light Hotel is a fantastic showpiece for the ‘lobby evolution’ transforming public spaces from cold and business-like to warm and innovative. Part of the Preferred Hotels brand, their unique ‘Artist in Residence’ concept sees the downstairs space transformed into a living performance platform where a cutting-edge name, be it from the world of music, design or writing, stays in the hotel for a month and takes over the lobby and hosts temporary exhibitions. Whether it’s a DJ on the decks or an artist restyling the walls, guests can expect a stylish celebration of Scandinavia’s constantly evolving art scene, and the vibrant individuals who make it. Boasting rooms that are unmistakably Nordic in design – namely bright, calming and well-equipped – and a convenient location round the corner from Stockholm’s Central Station, their mantra of “Grown-up, central and good looking” sums up the hotel’s vibe with superb Scandinavian efficiency.

The rise of extended-stay hotels has been pioneered by brands like AKA, whose seamless blend of stunning design and state-of-the-art amenities offers world-weary travellers a sophisticated spot to set up camp for a week or more. Surrounded by Manhattan’s embarrassment of cultural riches, iconic museums and stylish department stores, AKA Central Park takes a cue from its amazing environs and embraces the very best of chic, upmarket design. The spacious apartments house deluxe, marble-clad bathrooms and gourmet kitchens, with custom-designed contemporary furnishings giving them an uber-chic but refreshingly homely feel. Exotic Makassar ebony wood, luxurious velvet and leather upholstery and hand-selected Italian lighting all combine for an experience as personalised as it is luxurious, and one that’s sure to leave guests gratefully sighing ‘Home Sweet Hotel’ after a busy day immersed in the city that never sleeps.

The self-styled “newest kid on the Sunset Strip” is bringing the playful vibes and vibrant style of West Hollywood inside thanks to its modern, minimalist and effortlessly cool interiors. The Jeremy’s in-house eateries perfectly capture the essence of SoCal-chic – guests can grab a morning pick-me-up at the urban-inspired Etcho café; step back in time to the glory days of the silver screen surrounded by the sleek banquettes and marble table tops of the Joao cocktail bar; or unwind under the stars with an evening tipple in the rooftop bar’s climate-controlled outdoor lounge. The clean lines and airy feel of its distinctive design are underpinned by hints of luxury – onyx leather, dark hardwood and brass accents provide a touch of “rock & roll glam” – while The Jeremy’s art collection adds an extra dash of local character that helps marry luxury hotel experience with LA neighbourhood lifestyle.

Brought to you by an international hotel chain at the top of its game, the NH Collection Brussels throws together chic period features and super-sleek modern amenities. This is a brand that specialises in ‘continental cool’ – think impeccably attired guests in sharp suits and slick roll necks – with the hotel’s gorgeous art deco-style façade complementing a recently renovated 1920s staircase in a dazzling display of history and glamour. The modern décor of the bar and restaurant brings together a clean look with a warm, inviting appeal, while the apartments feature impressive bathroom designs that aren’t afraid to show off. The NH Collection encourages guests to “feel the extraordinary”, and with a captivating terrace that offers sweeping city views and a buffet restaurant on the 9th floor (come on, who doesn’t love starting the day with a rooftop breakfast?), there’s ample opportunity to do so, particularly with plush Presidential Suites providing the perfect place for that romantic European stay.
